A Quick History
The Red Barn is believed to date back to at least the 16th Century, and it could be even older. Originally serving as a Tythe Barn for monks from Bury St Edmunds, it was a place to store and thresh grain. The construction is of oak posts and beams, some over 12 inches square and 20 ft long, with hand-carved joints secured by wooden pegs. The design is known as an Aisled Barn. Over the centuries, The Red Barn has undergone several repairs, alterations, and improvements, preserving its rich history while evolving with the times.
In the 16th Century, the farm on which The Red Barn stands was purchased by Dr John Caius, the Queen's doctor in the reign of Queen Mary I and Philip of Spain. He used the farm as an endowment for the college he founded at Cambridge. The farm was later sold away from the college in 1920 and remains a commercial working farm, now known as 'College Farm'.
